Shared Tomatoes began as a small way of paying attention.
Over time, the writings became less about ideas and more about presence — the ordinary moments, interruptions, relationships, diminishments, and quiet graces that shape a human life. What first appeared as scattered reflections slowly revealed a common thread: small things matter.
The phrase “a ministry of small things” emerged gradually through medicine, spiritual accompaniment, family life, retreat work, aging, and the ordinary encounters that often pass unnoticed. Again and again, it seemed that what changed people most was rarely dramatic. More often, it was simple presence, honest conversation, tenderness, listening, relinquishment, or the willingness to remain near another person.
These writings are offered in that spirit.
Some pieces are reflective and contemplative. Some are quieter companion volumes meant for particular seasons of life. Others explore attention, distraction, aging, prayer, accompaniment, and what remains as life changes shape.
None of them attempt to provide final answers. They are simply offered as companions for reflection and for becoming more attentive to the life already being lived.
Shared Tomatoes continues as an ongoing body of contemplative writing rooted in the belief that no one becomes fully human alone, and that even small acts of presence may carry more life than we realize.
Small things do not stay small when they carry attention, tenderness, and grace.

Where the Books Are Shared
The books are often shared in retreat houses, spiritual direction, formation programs, hospice settings, patient housing, and personal exchanges—places where a quiet book may become a companion rather than a task to complete.
These books are not meant to move primarily through promotion or scale.
They are shared slowly—through gifting, placement, and conversation—where they may be received with freedom: to read, to set aside, or to return to over time.
